After a time of 19.31 s in the distance, Lyle is now the third fastest person.
"Today is my day. The dream I finally made comes true," Lyles said after the race.
What I was imagining was "probably the best start I've got."
The US has now become the first country to win a World Championships medal in both the men's 100m and 200m events.
